BEMIDJI — The BSU Symphonic Band, a mix of college students and community musicians, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, in the Main Theater at Bangsberg Performing Arts Complex.
The group is conducted by Ryan Webber, adjunct professor of music at Bemidji State University.

“In addition to BSU students, this band includes retired teachers and other community members who just want an outlet to play their instruments,” Webber said. “That’s what makes this group special. I couldn’t do it without community members.”
The Symphonic Band will perform six pieces, including “A Hymn for the Lost and the Living” by Eric Ewazen, a renowned American composer and teacher who visited BSU earlier this year.
“It’s just a beautiful piece,” Webber said. “It’s dedicated to people who lost their lives or loved ones in the 9/11 attacks in 2001. It’s the work I’ve wanted to do with this band for a long time and I’m excited to do it this semester.”
Also on the program is a children’s march titled “Over the Hills and Far Away” by Percy Grainger.
BSU student Brendon Warren will take the baton to conduct the “Alvamar Overture” by James Barnes. Warren will be student teaching next semester.
“He’s doing a fabulous job on the piece with the group,” Webber said. “I am thankful that I can at least share the podium with him for one piece to give him that experience.”
