Evelyn Von Gizycki, a current student in the Department of Art and Design, has been recognized for her exceptional talent and creativity. Recently, Evelyn was selected as one of three honorees for the Books for All digital art challenge, hosted by TechConnect in collaboration with Apple and the New York Public Library (NYPL). Her artwork stood out among numerous submissions for its creativity, technical skill, and ability to inspire others in celebration of the freedom to read.
The honor culminated in an invitation to the Books for All Learning Celebration, held at the iconic Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the NYPL’s flagship location. Known for its remarkable historical collections and commitment to providing free and equal access to knowledge, the building served as the perfect venue for the celebration. Evelyn, alongside two other honorees, was invited to give a speech at the event, where her words resonated deeply with both the judges and the audience. Evelyn shared her interpretation of the cover of a banned young adult memoir, which had deeply moved her.
As part of the recognition, Evelyn’s artwork was featured in a mini-exhibition with the NYPL and Apple, marking a significant moment in her creative journey. The experience also highlights the importance of accessible educational programs, such as those offered by Montclair State University, which provide a foundation for individuals to explore their creative passions at any stage in life.
Evelyn’s journey into visual arts also underscores the power of reinvention. A 55-year-old Brooklyn native with a diverse career in fashion, jewelry design, and holistic healthcare, she returned to her creative roots after a challenging time. Inspired by a desire to explore art once again, a friend recommended Montclair for art classes. When she discovered a jewelry design class that sparked her interest, she enrolled in Montclair State University’s Visual Arts program.
During the summer break, Evelyn took classes in coding and music production at the New York Public Library, which eventually led to her recognition in art. She credits Montclair for giving her the confidence to pursue new creative challenges. “If I hadn’t come to Montclair first, I never would have had the courage to take those next steps,” she says.
Evelyn hopes her journey will encourage more individuals, especially adult learners, to explore creative fields and to pursue opportunities that may have once seemed out of reach. With recognition from both Apple and the NYPL, Evelyn’s work is poised to inspire a new generation of artists to embrace their creativity and take their place in the broader conversation about art and education. Now, she hopes her story will inspire other adult learners to follow their artistic dreams at Montclair State University.
