CCIW Announces Women’s Tennis All-Conference Team

NAPERVILLE – North Central sophomore Abigail Penados has been voted College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Women’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, while Augustana freshman Anna-Maria Huebel is the league’s First-Year Student-Athlete of the Year. The announcement comes as part of the All-CCIW Teams released by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Additionally, North Central head coach Ryan Jump repeated as the CCIW Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season. The seventh-year head coach led the Cardinals to an unbeaten path through the CCIW schedule and NCC’s fourth consecutive regular-season conference championship. The Cardinals have won 43 CCIW dual matches in a row.

Penados, a sophomore from Morton Grove, Ill., joined Kaeli Smashey (2021, 2022) as North Central players to win the league’s Student-Athlete of the Year award after going a perfect 8-0 in singles competition from the #1 spot in the NCC lineup. She was also unbeaten in doubles play, pairing with Natalie Bassett to win all eight matchups with conference opponents.

Huebel emerged as the #1 singles player in the Augustana lineup. The Vienna, Austria native put up a 3-3 singles mark, and also collected five victories during the conference schedule at #2 doubles while playing alongside teammate Natasha Gauerke.

Twelve players earned All-CCIW honors on Monday – six on the First Team and six on the Second Team. Penados joined Wheaton’s Madeline Gentry and Audrey Vick as repeat selections on the First Team. Bassett and Hanna Zethraeus of North Park landed on the First Team after collecting Second Team choices last fall.

Millikin’s Emily Markus earned her second consecutive Second Team nod, while Carthage’s Xingchen Liu was also a repeat honoree.

Bassett, Vick and Markus are the only three-time All-CCIW picks honored Monday.
