Conservation Champion Khonaye Gcaza Honoured for Leadership!

Khonaye Gcaza, a brilliant young mind from the Western Cape, is making waves in the world of conservation! The high schooler recently won the prestigious Youth in Conservation Award at the SANParks Kudu Awards for her inspiring contributions to preserving the environment.

Midrand, South Africa (02 December 2024) – Worthy of being celebrated as a conservation champion, Khonaye Gcaza has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and dedication to sustainability from a young age.

Her commitment to protecting and preserving the environment in school and community was honoured with the prestigious Youth in Conservation Award at the SANParks Kudu Awards held last week in Midrand.

Khonaye has spearheaded recycling initiatives, youth dialogues, and food gardening to secure the title of Eco-Leader of the Year at her school, Intsebenziswano High School in the Western Cape, where she also holds the role of being a passionate WESSA reporter.

According to WESSA, Khonaye has created an indelible mark on her school and community, showing what it means to be a true changemaker.

“Her vision and innovation played a pivotal role in her school’s victory at the WESSA-eWASA Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge, where she presented a groundbreaking Biomimicry Green Roof Prototype—a testament to the power of youth-led creativity in tackling environmental challenges.

“This award celebrates not just her achievements but also the impact of youth like Khonaye who embody the spirit of WESSA and UNICEF’s YERA (Young Environment and Reporters and Advocates of the Environment) programme, leading the charge for a more sustainable future,” the organisation said.

The promising environmental champion is congratulated on her deserving win at the Kudu Awards and her unwavering commitment to conservation. Khonaye, you’re an inspiration to us all!
