UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State first-year student Avery Selivan, majoring in digital art and media design, is the winner in the fall 2024 Gallery@104 juried art and design competition. Her entry, “Slava Ukraini,” is a mixed media (gouache, watercolor, alcohol markers, highlighters, chalk, and colored pencils) piece depicting Ukrainian refugees seeking haven in a derelict church. She used her civilian lens to point out the contrast between a place of holy worship and the imagery of war and bitter survival.
Runner-up Fiona Combs is a senior quadruple-majoring in art, English, medieval studies and Spanish, with two minors in art history and global and international studies. Combs used inspiration from her study abroad in Ireland to create “First Light on the Forest’s Edge,” an ink-on-linen tapestry. Representing the Irish landscape, literature, and visual arts, Combs used all-natural inks made of buckthorn and oak galls to depict a forested area behind the Burren College of Art in County Clare, Ireland, as an invitation for the viewer to follow the little path, explore the woods of Ireland, and discover what lays beyond.
Gallery@104 is a new and exciting way for undergraduates to exhibit their creative work to a targeted audience of Arts and Architecture current and prospective students, faculty and visitors. The goal is to provide a competitive experience for A&A students across all majors where they can submit their work to be juried and awarded prizes. The gallery’s location in 104 Borland, where college tours originate, means prospective students have the chance to see what opportunities are available for them in the College of Arts and Architecture. The exhibition rotates twice a year with prize money and ribbons for the winners.
Gallery@104 is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. For more information, email [email protected].
