It was good to hear that Cork’s Marina Market has been granted ‘conditional’ permission to keep trading, but as a Dub, it was even better to hear that the Government has announced €9m in funding for conservation works on our long-closed, long-neglected Iveagh Market in D8. With the capital lagging behind the likes of Cork, with the famous English Market, and Limerick, with its fab Milk Market, or Belfast and its impressive St George’s Market, the news was like music to my ears.

Markets have always been a centre for life and social activity, especially on the continent. Many have come back from abroad eulogising spots like La Boqueria in Barcelona, Time Out in Lisbon, the stunning art-deco style La Ribera in Bilbao, or the Borough Market in London.
