Rita Lee, a freedom rock singer from Brazil, died at age 75 after having lung cancer for two years.

Rita Lee died late last night at her home in Sao Paulo, surrounded by her family, as she always wanted, according to a message posted on the singer’s Instagram.

Several artists, lawmakers, and other well-known people paid tribute to the late singer.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called her “an artist ahead of her time” and “one of the greatest and most brilliant names in Brazilian music.”

Lee was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on December 31, 1947. She helped start the Tropicalia movement by making risky music in the 1960s when the military was in charge.

The rock star had 20 albums, and 55 million copies of those albums were sold. While her songs were about women and sexuality, which have been seen as taboo for a long time.

Rita Lee was told she had lung cancer in the year 2021.
