Dr. Robert Parel says bariatric surgery is a weight loss surgery that focuses on the stomach, intestines, or both to achieve long-term weight loss.

“Patients will lose 30 to 40 percent of their excess weight and have multiple benefits from that,” says Parel. “Lowering their blood pressure, lowering their cholesterol, good effect on diabetes, improving back pain, joint pain, all the good things that come with weight loss.”

Parel says Atrium Health Navicent offers gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. Atrium also offers weight loss management assistance after surgery.
