This week on Yahoo Finance’s Warrior Money, Patrick Murphy and Dan Kunze are joined by Andrew Bang, a US Army captain turned investment management executive. The Cornell MBA graduate currently serves as an advisor at SECOR Asset Management, but as he explains, his career in finance relies on the same mission-driven ideology that his time in the military did.
“SECOR advises pension clients, primarily, and certainly other large institutional clients,” Bang explains, “but we have a fiduciary responsibility to our clients and to the pensioners of these organizations.”
To Bang, the mission is ensuring those pensioners’ well-being, a concept that affects the investment decisions he and his team make.
“What we do, we look at from long-term investing,” he explains. “We are looking at liabilities that are 10, 20, 30 years out. So when folks work for a large organization, we certainly endeavor to make sure that their pension benefits are available when they do retire.”
For military veterans transitioning into the private sector, identifying personal purpose is often a key factor in ensuring their success and well-being. Many guests on Warrior Money have echoed the same sentiment, noting that having a meaningful reason behind their career gave them motivation.
In addition to the purpose he finds in his investment management work, Bang’s desire to give back to his country also drives him to volunteer with organizations like Business Executives for National Security (BENS) and the USO.
In his conversation with Murphy and Kunze, Bang also reflects on the importance of education in his transition into the private sector, the scaling issue at the Department of Defense, and what military skills he has carried into business.
Hosted by former Congressman Patrick Murphy and veteran investor Dan Kunze, Yahoo Finance’s Warrior Money is a weekly vodcast dedicated to uplifting military veterans transitioning into civilian life. Through insights from fellow veterans and high-ranking government officials, Murphy and Kunze are helping set vets up for success through financial education and inspiration.
