Transylvania Community Arts Council is hosting its first exhibit of the year, “Community” which opens Friday, Jan. 17 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 15.
As an open exhibit “Community” features artwork created by local and regional artists of all ages in a variety of mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, wood and clay.
“The year 2024, and particularly Hurricane Helene, showed western North Carolina the importance of ‘community,’” said Kathy King, the Arts Council’s executive director, explaining the exhibit’s theme. “Our community can provide us with support, a sense of belonging and many other benefits, but we left the theme of this exhibit intentionally broad and open to many interpretations.”
Billy Smith, Arts Council board president, added: “With this theme we are asking artists to explore how they envision community, how community is visually evident in Transylvania County or in other areas.”
In addition to other local and regional artists, “Community” will feature the Hurricane Helene art collection of multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Kira Bursky (aka All Around Artsy). Bursky, an award-winning creator, has produced more than 60 short films that have screened globally; developed an immersive projection-based installation; and expanded her artistic repertoire with the launch of All Around Artsy Fashion, a wearable art brand.
On Friday, Jan. 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the Arts Council is hosting a reception so that the public can meet the artists, visit with other arts enthusiasts and enjoy refreshments. Bursky will also be on hand to discuss her Hurricane Helene collection and answer questions about her project.
The Arts Council is located at 349 S. Caldwell St. in Brevard. Gallery hours during exhibitions are Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the Arts Council and to enroll in art classes, visit tcarts.org or call (828) 884-2787.
