Nutrition Knowledge – 25 for Health

Welcome 2025! This year, we are going to focus on the 25 healthiest foods that we can eat. By understanding why these foods are among the healthiest and how to incorporate them into our regular routine, we can achieve a healthy foundation for the nutrition component of our life. By the end of the year, we will have a list of 25 healthy options that we have incorporated, and experience the benefits that they offer.

Let’s start with the first category and choose two (2) of the healthiest: FRUIT. We all know that fruit is packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Two of the healthiest options are blueberries and pomegranate.

Blueberries are high in nutrients, with a good portion of vitamin C and K, as well as fiber, in a 1/2 cup serving. Filled with antioxidants, they counteract the oxidative stress our body experiences every day, including the oxidative stress that can increase our brain’s aging process. They have also been shown in research to have benefits of lowering blood pressure and improving factors that contribute to diabetes. Muscle recovery and exercise performance are also among their many benefits. Eat them fresh, or add a 1/2 cup frozen blueberries to a smoothie.

Pomegranate is very popular this time of year because of their festive color, but their amazing health benefits should encourage us to consume them year round.

High in nutrients and antioxidants that help to keep inflammation at bay, pomegranate also benefits our heart and liver. Polyphenols in pomegranate also benefit our kidneys, possibly inhibiting kidney stone formation, and also show benefits to the prostate in men. Exercise endurance and muscle recovery are also found in studies with pomegranate arils (the seeds inside), as well as brain health, and lowering blood pressure. Enjoy the arils by the handful, or add to a salad.

Making these two fruits part of our daily routine shows amazing benefits and gives us a healthy dose of the nutrients and antioxidants that we need.
