Cavod will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an event at the Worship Center featuring performances, interactive exhibits about the theater’s history and free refreshments.
Founded by Connie Dienner, Cavod is a nonprofit organization focused on presenting “positive and redemptive productions,” according to its website. Cavod has two locations: 665 W. Main St. in New Holland, and 1223 Lancaster Road, Suite 115, in Manheim’s Penn Towne Center.
“Lifetime Tour: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are Going” will be 2-5 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.
Admission is free, but registration is required as space is limited. Register online by visiting cavod.org and selecting “20th Year Celebration” on the home page. Cake, coffee, hot chocolate and other refreshments will be served.
Guests will receive a “passport” upon arrival that they can get stamped at 12 exhibits chronicling Cavod’s journey. Those who get their passport stamped at all 12 locations will be eligible a drawing with prizes including unlimited classes, AirPods, an iPad and more.
There will also be performances by ventriloquist Marian and Friends and illusionist Jay Stoltzfus. The event will culminate with a presentation featuring videos, student performances and testimonies and worship. The theater will also give a “sneak preview” to its future plans, too.
Cavod Theatre began as Capitol Academy of the Arts in a rebuilt barn on Welsh Mountain in Gap, where Dienner sought to give students performance opportunities in family-friendly shows with modest costumes and non-sexualized dance. It later became known as Chabod Academy, and finally, as Cavod Academy for the Performing Arts.
Its mission is “offering a Godly environment that inspires excellence in the arts to build community and impact lives.”
Stan Deen, the Garden Spot High School teacher who inspired the film “Brave the Dark,” directed community theater performances for Cavod in his retirement. (Dienner’s son, Derek Dienner of Make/Films, was a producer on “Brave the Dark.”)
In addition to the anniversary celebrations, Connie Dienner will release a memoir, “From Barn to Stage,” at the Feb. 8 event. Dienner collaborated with author Shawn Smucker, who also worked with Anne “Auntie Anne” Beiler on her memoir, “Twist of Faith.” In “From Barn to Stage,” Dienner shares stories like singing and dancing for pigs on the farm where she grew up and starting what became Cavod in that Welsh Mountain barn.
