In partnership with state universities and colleges (SUCs), public education institutions, and community-based organizations, the University of the Philippines has launched an interactive arts and culture program to empower indigenous peoples and marginalized communities across the Philippines.
The program began Jan. 7, 2025, with an interactive concert by UP Kontra-GaPi (Kontemporaryong Gamelang Pilipino) at the Philippine Science High School in Butuan City. Kontra-GaPi is the first arts and culture group to join the initiative.
Composed of musician-performers, Kontra-GaPi engages audiences with rhythms, sounds, movements, and costumes inspired by the indigenous cultures of Southeast Asia. The ensemble, led by Art History Professor Pedro “Edru” Abraham, has earned international recognition for its innovative approach to arts education and cultural ambassadorship.
“As a vital part of the country’s public higher education system, the University finds it critical to intensify efforts toward positive national transformation through active collaboration and by grounding our strengths in local communities,” UP President Angelo Jimenez said.
“We aim to encourage participation from indigenous and marginalized communities, showcasing how their traditions have inspired innovations in many disciplines, including internationally acclaimed musical performances,” he added.
The UP initiative features an arts and culture caravan designed to celebrate the diversity of Philippine heritage while fostering platforms for growth and collaboration, Jimenez explained.
The program’s first stop was the CARAGA region, encompassing the five provinces of Region XIII in Northeastern Mindanao.
Ahead of the Kontra-GaPi concert, UP, the Commission on Higher Education, and educational institutions in the area signed a “Declaration of Support for Culture and the Arts.”
