Charlie Cox clarifies ‘Avengers’ Instagram snafu, says casting assumptions were ‘not true’ (exclusive)

Back in December, Charlie Cox found himself at the center of a massive online frenzy.

The owners of the gym DFRNT Health and Fitness in Western Australia posted a photo of the Daredevil actor posing with his wife, Sam, next to their trainers. The caption at the time mentioned, “Charlie is currently training for his role in the upcoming Avengers movie.”

The account owners soon edited that language out of the comment, but it didn’t stop everyone from assuming Marvel’s Man Without Fear would show up in Avengers: Doomsday, which is filming this year ahead of a 2026 debut in theaters. Since then, various sources on social media have claimed that Cox will have some involvement in the next Avengers.

Cox clarifies the situation in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, as part of an exclusive sneak peek at his new Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

“I was there for Christmas with my family,” the actor explains in an interview conducted earlier this month. “And on the last day, they asked if they could take a picture with me, which we did. I had said to them, ‘I’m getting ready to play Daredevil,’ ’cause I am! I’m getting ready to play Daredevil in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. Sometimes people who aren’t really in the [entertainment] world, they don’t understand the terminology or whatever, but for some reason they posted that and they put ‘getting ready for his role in the Avengers,’ which is not true.”

Cox remembers how that post “went mental for a minute.” Suddenly, “I felt terrible,” he says. “I had to call my bosses and say, ‘I didn’t say that,’ obviously. Why would I say that? Why would I make something like that up? But I don’t think they made it up. I think they just got confused about what it is. I don’t know.”

Daredevil: Born Again launches its first season on March 4 with two out of nine episodes on Disney+. Set some time after the events of Cox’s original Daredevil Netflix show, which ran from 2015-2018, Matt has retired his vigilante cowl, while his archenemy, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), sets his sights on the mayoral race in New York City. Fellow alums from the Netflix original Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Wilson Bethel, Ayelet Zurer, and Jon Bernthal are also joined by franchise newcomers Margarita Levieva, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki M. James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, and Michael Gandolfini.

So what does Cox’s future as Daredevil in the MCU hold? “Other than season 2 of Daredevil, I have no knowledge of any other commitments at all.” Season 2 will begin filming within five days of the season 1 launch, according to showrunner Dario Scardapane. “It definitely feels like Matt Murdock is in that [Marvel] world more,” Cox adds, “but it would be cool for that journey to continue.”
