Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute to be held in Vermillion, S.D. this June

VERMILLION S.D. (KTIV) – The University of South Dakota will host an annual summer arts institute for high school students this summer.

From Sunday, June 1 until Thursday, June 13, the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute (OHSAI) will take place at the college, located in Vermillion, S.D. The institute is open to high school students who are interested in both visual arts and American Indian Culture.

All accepted art students have the chance to attend the summer program, free of charge, due to a financial donor. This includes meals, housing, instructions and art supplies, according to the University of South Dakota’s Art Department.

All applications are due on Tuesday, April 1. Students must include the following in their application.

  • Application form due April 1
  • Letter of reference from a teacher, artist or interested party, explaining why the nominated student should be accepted into the institute.
  • Portfolio of artwork with a maximum of 10 images of the student’s artwork. The university says the preferred method when submitting artwork is to send it by email, in a jpg format, to [email protected].

The institute provides an opportunity for up to 20 high school artists to learn about contemporary Native American Fine Arts.

“The OHSAI honors longtime University of South Dakota professor and American Northern Plains artist, Oscar Howe, by helping educate the next generation of Native American artists.” said the University of South Dakota, “Howe established a summer art institute in the 1960s that provided instruction to avid students desiring to learn more about Native American art.”

The university says the current OSHAI started in 1991 and continues to support the goals Howe set up by transferring culture and knowledge from one generation to the next.

“Community is a big part of the OSHAI, offering students both professional contacts and longtime friendships,” said the university.
