Shiwani Chakraborty, who is part of the show Anupamaa, says television is a collaborative effort

Can you tell us about your character in Anupamma?

I play Prem’s chachi in the show. The Kotharis are a wealthy diamond merchant family, and my character, Meeta Kothari, also comes from an affluent background. She has always believed that her husband deserves a rightful place in the family. Meeta is ambitious and somewhat greedy. She wants her family to rise in stature. There are multiple layers to her personality and as the show progresses, viewers will get to see more dimensions of her character. She is self-centered and determined to ensure that her husband and son establish a strong position in the family.

What do you think is the secret behind the success of Anupamaa?

Without a doubt, Anupamaa has become a name. It has been running successfully for five years and people are still deeply connected to it. The show is not just a story—it’s an emotion for the audience. Being part of such a show, produced by DKP and Rajan sir, is an honour.

Do you feel any pressure that millions of viewers are emotionally invested in your character?

I believe a certain level of pressure is necessary for actors. Confidence is great, but overconfidence can be dangerous. Actors are like clay—they mould themselves according to the character’s needs. A little pressure helps us perform better and stay dedicated to our roles.

Characters evolve throughout a show. How do you prepare for major changes, especially intense dramatic shifts?

I consider myself a director’s actor. I always follow my director’s vision and the makers’ guidance. During script readings, they ensure that we understand the character’s arc and prepare us accordingly. Dramatic scenes, especially ones we’ve never done before, can be challenging. But having supportive co-actors and directors makes a huge difference. Television is a collaborative effort and when you work as a team, it becomes easier to bring out the best in your performance.

Should viewers expect any major twists or developments in the show?

Television thrives on drama and Anupamaa is no exception. Without twists and turns, the audience wouldn’t stay engaged. We don’t always know what’s coming next! Now that Prem is returning, viewers can expect even more drama and unexpected developments.
