Mass. varsity athlete who died in shooting ‘simply loved the game of basketball’

The 18-year-old Salem State University student shot dead near his university early Wednesday morning is being remembered for his love of basketball as a first-year varsity player.

Carl-Hens Beliard of Worcester was found severely injured from gunfire in his car on Forest Avenue near campus by police around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, and was brought to North Shore Medical Center where he died, the Essex County District Attorney’s Office said.

Early findings suggested the shooting was not a random act, and authorities are still looking for a suspect, according to the office.
