NOC Review: ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is Marvel Television at Its Peak

Even as a Marvel fan, I’ll be the first to admit that not all of the MCU’s Disney+ shows have worked. I really didn’t care for Secret Invasion or She-Hulk. However, when they’ve hit, such as X-Men ’97, WandaVision, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Loki, they’ve hit hard. And that brings us to one of the hardest hitters of all: Daredevil: Born Again.

Apart from X-Men ’97, which I consider the best thing to come out of the Marvel Studios’ Disney+ initiative, Marvel Television has never been better than Daredevil: Born Again. In fact, Born Again signifies a studio best when it comes to the MCU’s live-action streaming endeavors. One may skeptically believe this to be recency bias. However, I’m being completely objective when I say this. It’s a return to the complex Netflix grit we have been salivating for since the initial cancellations of The Defenders shows, and a mature, deep exploration on the natures of violence, identity, guilt, responsibility, and corruption.

Acting as a direct continuation of where the Netflix series and Echo left off, Daredevil: Born Again begins with a bang, and a hell of a controversial decision that will definitely ruffle fan feathers. However from that decision comes a rich story that pits newly elected Mayor of New York, Wilson Fisk, against Matt Murdock. What follows is an exploration about who both of these characters are at their core, what defines them, and what defines heroism and villainy. Much like the original series, there are multiple storylines in the season that interconnect, all of which are in service of the larger character arcs, building into a crescendo that leaves us wanting more immediately.

We were given the opportunity to view all nine episodes of this first season, so fair warning: *If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading and come back after the finale.*

It was a brilliant idea for Born Again to take cues from the famed Devil’s Reign storyline by Chip Zdarsky and Mayor Fisk storyline by Charles Soule to reflect the current state of the country today. The show, as it always has, possesses much to say about the nature of power and corruption, but also desperation. Many scenes are interspliced with commentary from journalist BB Urich (continuing the work of her uncle, Ben Urich, who was killed in the original series) about the uneasiness of New York’s citizens and their views for why they’d vote for someone like Fisk.

While we know Fisk is a monster and convicted criminal, the depiction of his rise to political power echoes current events today, with desperation seemingly giving rise to unconventional decisions. Fisk rises to power because the people of New York are scared, and want someone who they believe will get things done for them. All the while not realizing that The Kingpin still cares primarily about his own pockets and his vendettas. The character going so far as to elect a personal task force and declare martial law to allow himself to exercise his own will and power grounds the series in the reality we are facing today in post-Trump America. The series is a reflection for how easy it is for a character like Fisk to amass power, abuse it, and corrupt a political institution without much push back.

There’s a moment, even, when a character tells Matt, “Fisk has the courts. He’s got the cops. He has an army…I feel lost, I feel angry, I feel f**king hopeless. The whole city is there. ” In that moment, the character was essentially speaking to me, and millions of others like me who have felt this way since the current administration took office. However, they also end up speaking about hope and resilience on the face of this darkness. Which again, feels like a pointed message for people not to give up hope in the good of others, and people in general. Something that I feel is a stark reminder that we need to hear from time to time. It’s poignant and hard-hitting while allowing us to be entertained by the action and legal drama that unfolds.

The season also does a terrific job exploring the similarities between Fisk and Matt, from the moment they first meet again, to several episodes where scenes between them are interspliced with them going through parallel journeys and struggles in accepting who they really are. Fisk can’t escape being The Kingpin, any more than Matt can escape being Daredevil. They are both men of rage and fury, who put on facades to pretend to fit in with the rest of the broken world around them, all the while ultimately lying to themselves about who they truly are for better or worse. This is such an interesting exploration for a dynamic between a villain and a hero, and one that the show has expertly been elaborating on since the original Netflix days. However, it’s thoughtfully and skillfully executed here, building on what came before, with Cox and D’Onofrio giving smarter, braver performances than ever before to bring us more complex, evolved versions of both characters, transformed by their respective traumas.

Whenever the duo is on screen, it is seriously electric. They both bring elements of rage, but also frustration. Cox does not miss a single beat both as a Matt Murdock who has essentially lost everything but is still trying to hold on to his beliefs in a broken system, and a darker Daredevil that serves as the foundation for his internal conflicts. Despite the difficulties of his struggles, you still can’t help but root for Matt, because of Cox’s charms and everyman quality. As he did before, but even more so in Born Again, Cox captures the very essence of what makes Daredevil such a fan favorite character. He reminds us of us: the continuous struggle to try and hold on to hope despite the worst situations happening, and occasionally failing to resist our more wrathful impulses. It gets me so incredibly excited to know this is a character that will be interacting with the greater landscape of the MCU.

D’Onofrio’s is also incredible, creating such complexity for Fisk that, at times, he fools the audience into thinking he’s actually turning over a new leaf. We actually want to believe the conclusion of Echo may have changed him for the better. And he convinces us of the love he has for his own city and Vanessa. Therefore it becomes easier to understand why fictionally, folks may vote for him. However, like Cox’s Murdock performance, as D’Onofrio slips further and further back into The Kingpin persona, he once again becomes utterly terrifying. It’s power and gravitas working together to build a fully fleshed out monster, and a perfect villain for Murdock. Whenever these two are onscreen together, as well, it’s such intense magic.

In supporting roles, we get a few standout newcomers. The tragically late and wonderful Kamar de los Reyes introduces us to Hector Ayala with a wonderful performance. He’s sympathetic, but powerful, allowing us to fall in love with his pure-hearted character for what little screentime he’s given. Hunter Doohan is also incredibly creepy, playing a fan-favorite villain who takes up a very disturbing multi-episode arc for this season. And Clark Johnson and Genneya Walton turn in some very strong performances as Matt’s retired cop buddy, Cherry, and BB Urich.

The one character that I have a feeling won’t be a popular one among fans is unfortunately Margarita Levieva’s Heather Glenn. Of the characters we are introduced to in this new series, Heather is by far the most obnoxious and clueless. It’s potentially attributed to the fact that she serves as a type of proxy for another character who we would have wanted more of in the series. However, she ends up being a poor substitute, and an annoying presence for the show (likely intentionally so), as things slowly progress with her story arc.

That being said, the truth is everyone tuning in will likely be doing so for what the original series is known for: the incredible, bone-breaking action. And Born Again lives up to that standard. I will say nothing specifically *tops* the best scenes from the first three seasons of Daredevil. However, they are still pretty damn spectacular. We get a brutal hallway/stairwell fight scene within the first 10 minutes of the show. In the second episode there’s an epic fight at the end. There’s also a lot of really brutal beat-ups and kills. There’s a scene where Matt absolutely wrecks an Irish gangster in broad daylight. There’s another kill in the final episode of the season that would make The Mountain from Game of Thrones squeamish. Ergo, anyone worried the series would get “Disney-fied” needn’t worry. There’s blood, there’s bone snapping, there’s headshots and stabbing. There’s a scene with a tooth that made me go “holy s**t,” another with an arm getting slit, and characters draining blood from other characters. In short, what they did with the action and the MA-rated brutality here is exactly what made me think Daredevil was so back!

As far as the writing on the show goes from a narrative standpoint, in addition to the complex themes and character studies, I admired how the various storylines from the season seamlessly blended together. Everything we see from the 2-3 episode story arcs ultimately weaves together perfectly, with dominoes being set up throughout every arc or one-shot episode to build to a logical point that feels earned. Nothing felt rushed or out-of-place for me. It was actually very well paced. And that’s rare for a Disney+ series, let alone specifically other MCU ones. That said, my advice to viewers is to remember that this is an 18-episode story. So we are only getting the first 9 episodes now, and there’s still another half left to go (currently in production).

One of the other things I love and respect about the series, from my perspective as a Nerd of Color, is how well it highlights POCs as heroes in this series, but also how unfairly stacked the deck is against these characters. The series depicts the struggles of good-hearted characters like Hector Ayala and others being persecuted at the hands of the penal system. At one point, Matt must defend a character who reminds him how difficult it is to struggle to survive and simply eat as a Black man trying to live, but is continuously getting busted unfairly; how the system would rather soon money to lock him up than to feed its people. It’s a touching and poignant scene that puts a lot of things into perspective and contributes to Matt’s questioning of the system overall. I will say I wish it didn’t take as much of a White-savior approach to things. They do make the frustrating decision to fridge some POC characters, which isn’t great. However, I still admire the underlying message beneath it all, and the show’s commitment to capturing New York as a true melting pot, and highlighting several POCs as heroes (including a fun supporting role from a character I personally loved from another Marvel show).

In summary, we are so back! Born Again kicks off with powerful first season that progresses and challenges these characters to evolve in smart ways, and leaves us wanting to see more. It feels so incredible to have Cox and D’Onofrio return as their signature characters. And those who were concerned that these characters and Matt Murdock’s journey wouldn’t fit into the MCU can let out a sigh of relief and elation, as Daredevil: Born Again lets Daredevil be Daredevil, while still connecting him to the larger universe in a hard-hitting, brutal, and complexly thought provoking, character-driven way. The themes of power, corruption, and violence are poetically sewed into the fabrics of this series, as potent today as they were 10 years ago. Plus the action is wonderful, offering a brutal, bloody, bone-crunching, grisly good time. Daredevil: Born Again is, in short, the best live-action MCU series in the Disney+ era. And I couldn’t be more excited to say that we’re just getting started!
