One takeaway from tonight: the discrepancy between the Orange’s ability to connect from the 3-point range and get in the lane and draw contact.

Florida State-transfer Naheem McLeod, the 7-foot-4 center, swats away a shot and later finishes at the rim and throws down a big two-handed jam for some early second-half production.

First half

The College of St. Rose now with 10 first-half turnovers.

Mintz draws another foul. The Orange is up to 24 attempts from the line in the first half (it’s hit 19 of them) after a technical foul sends Bell to the line.

Mintz joins Bell in double figures with a run-out right-handed slam.

Bell with a seven-point burst in one sequence near the end of the half, finishing a lay-in through a flagrant foul. He earned a pair of free throws on top of the basket. Then he hit a 3 off the extra possession. He’s up to 19 points and 9-for-9 at the line tonight.

William Patterson is in the game.

Syracuse showing good ball movement to swing it around to Bell on the wing for a 3. Shot draws iron, but Bell got a good look.

Mintz grazes the front of the rim on his own 3, then Starling turns it over driving baseline and trying to find Bell in the corner. Syracuse is 2-for-9 from deep.

Bell sinks a pair from the line, where SU has a much higher percentage, after The College of St. Rose cuts the deficit to nine and Cuffe subs in for Starling.

The Golden Knights are competing on the glass, playing the Orange even.

Adam Silass, a Wofford transfer, hits a 3 as we come to the under-4 timeout.

Cuffe uses a Euro step in the lane to net another basket.

Syracuse flashes, effectively, a four-guard lineup with Mintz, Starling, Cuffe, Copeland and Carey on the floor midway through the first half.

Mintz winds up with a loose ball and dishes to Carey, who makes a nice catch underneath and finishes. McLeod subs in for Carey, who leaves with three points and three boards in about 5 minutes.

Cuffe with a steal and transition look to Copeland for a jam. Cuffe has three steals and two assists in 6 minutes. Cuffe then elevates and pulls down a rebound.

Mintz gets a floater in the lane. Peter Carey checks into the game for McLeod with 14:44 remaining.

JJ Starling looks for Carey down low in transition but has the pass tipped. Carey collects and draws a foul and a trip to the line, where he sinks 1-of-2 free throws.

Carey hits the deck trying to corral a loose ball the Orange had trouble rebounding. Autry rises to his feet and applauds the effort, even if the execution wasn’t smooth.

Justin Taylor hits from deep off the set, continuing his hot shooting in the preseason. Quadir Copeland picks up two quick fouls in about a minute of action, and Chris Bell is back in the game. Taylor, Carey, Mintz, and Kyle Cuffe Jr., also in the lineup here for the Orange.

Cuffe draws a foul and hits 1-of-2 from the line. He corrals his own miss and it leads to another trip to the line on a 3-point shot by Bell. He hits all three. Bell then gets a block at the other end.

Starling finishes a transition lay-in off the Cuffe feed, plus the foul.

The Orange is 7-of-10 from the free-throw line midway through the first half.

Pregame

Good evening and thanks for tagging along as Syracuse basketball concludes its preseason schedule against another Division II opponent.

Some pregame news: Junior forward Benny Williams has been suspended for a violation of team rules, according to the school. Williams will not play in tonight’s game. The school said he is expected to rejoin the program soon.

The school also said forward/center Maliq Brown will not play tonight due to a lower-body injury. The team said Brown is being held out for precautionary reasons.

So, that’s where the personnel stands.

The Orange displayed a quick tempo in its exhibition win against Division II Daemen last week. JJ Starling and Quadir Copeland both looked dangerous in transition and were willing passers. Point guard Judah Mintz sat out with a lower-body injury.

Daemen made 11-of-24 3s against SU’s man-to-man defense, so the Orange’s ability to guard the perimeter might be worth keeping an eye on, on this night.
