Terry Sanford girls tennis to play for staggering 15th state championship in team history

Terry Sanford girls’ tennis is headed to the state championship.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (18-0) defeated No. 3-seeded Rocky Mount (18-1) 5-1 on Wednesday at their home-court Gilmer L. “Gil” Bowman Tennis Complex to set up Terry Sanford’s first state dual-team championship appearance since 1994.

Just four days after Pauline Lui and Loren Galaviz delivered Terry Sanford’s record-tying seventh doubles title in the NCHSAA individual playoffs, the Bulldogs have earned the chance to play for a team title and restore the program’s place at the top of the sport.

Terry Sanford will play 3A West No. 2 seed Lake Norman Charter (23-0) on Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center for the NCHSAA championship title. The Bulldogs have dropped just four games in the playoffs, with three in their third-round win over Carrboro, and not a single set.

A win would give Terry Sanford its 15th state title in girls’ tennis, combining individual (10) and dual team (4) championships.

Before Saturday’s doubles championship by Lui and Galaviz, all of the Bulldogs’ titles had come during a run from 1977-’96 when they won six state championships in doubles, three individual titles and four straight dual-team championships.
