Hi, my name is Anne Laker. I’m a freelance writer and grants consultant, tree hugger, cinephile and super-chill friend hog.
Day One
6:30 a.m. The day starts like every other day of my life. I write in a pocket diary about what happened the day before. I call this long-term art project 10,000 Whens (a “when” is a day). Here is a short essay on why I do this, an Insta feed, and a website with 30+ years of diaries. On this morning, I jot about yesterday’s power outage and spilling hot tea on my lap, yow.

5 p.m. Run over to King Kennedy Park to catch the commemoration of RFK’s speech made at this site on the night Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. was assassinated. I’m a former board member of the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative so it’s good to mark this moment of solidarity with remarks by Rep. André Carson and Mayor Joe Hogsett.
6 p.m. My husband Joe and I meet up with our friend Tracy for a First Friday sojourn. After dinner at The AMP, we head to The Stutz. Tracy drools over the vintage cars and I drool over a buckwheat chocolate cookie from Amelia’s. But the real point is to see an exhibit organized by my friend Salma, a visual arts impresario. Salma’s art is featured at Indy’s Global Village.
8 p.m. We slide by Plat 99, the bar at The Alexander, where I snarf free truffle popcorn and Tracy drinks Manhattans. A drag queen named Anna is there to keep the party going.
9 p.m. Sheeting rain does not deter us from making a last ditch pit stop at The Tube Factory. It’s curator Shauta Marsh’s birthday and I want to give her a hug and see her latest show, Potawatomi artist Jason Wesaw. Also a hug to the inspirationally audacious poet and artist Sylvia Thomas.
Plat 99, the bar inside The Alexander hotel serves free truffle popcorn.

Day Two
9 a.m. On the first Saturday of the month, I go to a free zen meditation session at the Mudokwan dojo. I pretend the traffic swishing by the dead strip malls on Washington Street is the sound of ocean waves. Coming to zen all these years, I’ve really oxygenated my brain, and made a great friend: Fumiko, wife of the sensei, and a prolific nature Instagrammer.
1 p.m. I head downtown for the #HandsOff march, with my mother in tow. She’s 79 and says to me, “Let’s get arrested.” On the Red Line, we run into Earth Charter Indiana leader Jim Poyser and his partner Patricia. We step into the flow of veterans, grandmas, LGBTQ+ folk, and everyone else who is apoplectic about the dismantling of democracy and civil society. A cathartic time!
7:30 p.m. Meet up with friends Niina Cochran (illustrator/textile artist/designer) and Chris Vorhees (woodworker/sculptor/maker) for a trip to Butler University’s midcentury modern Holcomb Observatory. Tonight’s show is about the cosmic origins spectrograph, which analyzes ultraviolet light from distant stars. I declare that my DJ name should be “DJ Quasar” or “DJ Ultravi.” Chris says that if they’d let him take over the planetarium theater, he’d project a video of a big egg frying.

Day Three
8:30 a.m. Before my husband wakes up, I finalize a blurb my mentor asked me to write for his new haiku collection, “Snapshot Lightning.” My blurb reads: “Like tiny quartz crystals forged in life’s slow burn, each David Hoppe haiku cuts, sparkles, and keeps good time.”
5 p.m. After cleaning out the garage and grocery shopping, I go on a “food rescue” mission and score some organic cherry tomatoes. Only one fuzzy one in the bunch.
7:30 p.m. On Kanopy, out of nostalgia, I watch the 1994 thriller “Clear and Present Danger,” with Harrison Ford as a CIA guy rooting out presidential corruption. If only!

Day Four
8:30 a.m. I revise and assemble a $100,000 grant to the National Endowment for the Arts on behalf of the Aspire Higher Foundation. Their powerhouse executive director Sharon Clark is a long-time client through my solo writing/consulting practice, Laker Verbal LLC. Sharon wants the grant to use design to build identity in the Northwest Landing neighborhood.
7:30 p.m. Hit the “submit” button on the grant!
9 p.m. Get back to reformatting the new website for Girls Gone Wilder, the Little House on the Prairie blog (so old school) I’ve been doing with my friend Tracy off and on since 2012. How do you like the new logo by Andy Fry? And site design by Niina. New content coming soon!
Arts organizer Eduardo Luna visited “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” exhibition at the Children’s Museum Indianapolis, with his children and Anne Laker.

Day Five
Noon: After working on the Solar Opportunities Indiana project I consult for, I break for lunch and go in the backyard to hug our Norway maple. Feeling grounded!
4 p.m. My friend, Eduardo Luna, founder of Arte Mexicano en Indiana, picks me up for a quick trip to the Children’s Museum with his two kids, including my smart goddaughter Rosa. I’ve been jonesing to see the movie costume designs of Ruth E. Carter.
7 p.m. I take the Red Line to Storage Space for an artist convo by painter Marcus Robins and my friend Synergy. Robins talks about growing up bicultural and how he started painting to take his mind off a romance gone bad. Synergy performs his poem “Hip Hop from Another Dimension.” Rich, fun stuff.
LaDonna’s poem.

Day Six
Noon. The Center for Interfaith Cooperation has hired me to write profiles of members of their Interfaith Enrichment Corps. I interview Aracely Garcia at Muslims of the World Pastries & Coffee. She tells me about her IEC service work at a Latino church, and about motherhood. I love listening to her, and I love the vibe at MOTW.
7 p.m. Meeting my friend LaDonna at the Kan-Kan. She’s a magical holder of space. Over pickled veggies and steamed buns, she shares her just-written poem and drawing that expresses the multiplicity of being. We talk about her upcoming offering: Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. at draft in Fountain Square: a somatic yoga experience, complete with aromatherapy, music and a honey-mint elixir she makes. Yay.
8 p.m. By myself, see “Babette’s Feast,” a 1987 classic about a meal that changes everything. The Kan-Kan is my refuge, my altar, my escape portal. I love it to the moon.
Every second Thursday of the month is Collage Night at Dream Palace Books & Coffee, 111 E. 16th St.

Day Seven
8 a.m. Before I dig into drafting a grant for Arte Mexicano en Indiana, I check prospects for Flick Fix, my WQRT radio show/podcast. Admittedly struggling to find new movie releases that catch my fancy. Maybe “Grand Tour”? “The Wedding Banquet”? Anybody want to be my guest?
5 p.m. Walk to Dream Palace Books & Coffee for collage night. Cut up magazines with strangers. Return book loaned to me by Dream Palace owner Taylor Lewandowski: “Adventures with Julia,” by local author Candace Denning. A slim 1986 novel about female discontent. It’s lean as a bluegill and acidic as vinegar. Love. It.
8:30 p.m. Read some Mirror Indy culture journals … so many inspiring ones. Hit the hay.
