The Museum of Surrey will host an Indigenous culture fair in May.
The Cloverdale museum will welcome Indigenous artists and performers from across B.C. on Saturday, May 3. Last year, the annual event ran for two days (in July), but this year’s event will only run one day.
“We are so happy to be at the Museum of Surrey once again,” Maryanne Landrie, co-founder of Cedar, Sage and Sweetgrass, said in a press release. “A group of Indigenous Artists showing our best work.”
Cedar Sage and Sweetgrass is an Indigenous art collective founded by Landrie and Pat Calihou. Created several years ago, the group seeks to “highlight the talents of Indigenous artists and storytellers” in communities across the province.
“Each year we are honoured and excited to host this Indigenous artist event,” Lynn Saffery, museum manager, noted in the release. “The celebration is for all ages and showcases a diverse array of incredible Indigenous artists and performers.”
The festival will feature Indigenous music, dance, food, art, and artisan vendors. And festival-goers will also be able to meet the artists and performers.
This year’s vendor lineup includes: Maryanne Landrie, Pat Calihou, Sheila Rae Lowe, Valerie Boudreau, Patti Williams, Sabian Rawcliffe, John Spence, Cat Aldred, Nicimos Designs, Wendy Matthews, Judy Goldsmith, Clayton Williams, Sandra’s Metis Creations, and B’n Crafty.
In addition to the artisan market, attendees will enjoy live performances by Fawnda Bullshields (Pow Wow dancing), Keith Hill (Fiddle) and FJ Furlon (Métis music).
The one-day fest will run from 12 – 5 p.m. at the Museum of Surrey.
The Museum of Surrey is located at 17710 56A Avenue in Cloverdale. Entrance is free.
