May Jazz Extravaganza at New Tampa Performing Arts Center Featuring Tampa Bay Symphony and ‘The Women of Jazz’

May in Tampa just got a lot jazzier, and whether you’re a fan that’s serious or one that swings, the New Tampa Performing Arts Center (NTPAC) has a lineup that shouldn’t be missed. First up, the Tampa Bay Symphony will enchant audiences with “Scheherazade” on May 9. The symphony, “one of Tampa Bay’s hidden jewels,” according to the Hillsborough County, features over 80 musicians and performances including an arrangement by Amit Poznansky and Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto, with soloist Dylan Addonizio, plus the titular symphonic suite by Rimsky-Korsakov.

For something the little ones will enjoy, or maybe just the young at heart, “A Bug’s Life” will be crawling onto the big screen – with tickets running for a modest $5. This Pixar classic, which follows Flik’s antics, will be shown on May 10, a perfect Saturday activity. In a band of insect circus performers, he ends up enlisting them to help tackle an army of grasshoppers, greedily eyeing the colony’s food supply.

On May 11, NTPAC’s unplugged series showcases “The Women of Jazz.” Modeled after the MTV hit, this performance ditches the amps for an intimate setting with candlelit cabaret seating. The concert features the Tampa Bay saxophonist and vocalist Valerie Gillespie leading a set that honors jazz tunes penned by or made famous by women. If you’ve got $15-20 to spare for a ticket, it promises to be an afternoon mingling with the smooth and soulful sounds of jazz.

Wrapping up the month on May 21, Ken Peplowski and Diego Figueiredo are set to amp up New Tampa Jazz Nights, marking the season’s final note. Presented by NTPAC in partnership with the Tampa Jazz Club, this is where Peplowski’s clarinet and saxophone finesse meet Figueiredo’s sensational guitar skills. Together, they create a duo fans worldwide have labeled as magical. With tickets ranging from $10 to $30, this is one rendezvous with jazz virtuosity you would want to gather for – and you can snag those seats through Tampa Jazz Club.
