The County of Hawaii Department of Water Supply issued an immediate ongoing water conservation notice on Tuesday for customers in South Kohala.
Residents in the Ahualoa to Waiemi Subdivision including Honokaia, Puukapu, Nienie, Waimea Town, Lalamilo Farm Lots, portions of Mana Road and Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 19), Anekona Estates, and Kanehoa Subdivisions are asked to reduce water use by a minimum of at least 10%.
Water conservation is needed because of the prolonged lack of rainfall and operational issues with Waimea well, according to a DWS release.
Residents are asked to help conserve water by practicing the following:
- Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes
- Check faucets and pipes for leaks
- Do not let water run when washing hands, shaving or brushing teeth
- Reduce shower times
Officials also advise water customers to limit water use for dust control and irrigation. Additional water-saving tips are available at the DWS website under the “Conservation” tab.
Any updates will be available on the DWS website. To reach DWS, call 808-887-3030 or 808-961-8050 during normal business hours, 808-961-8790 for after-hour emergencies, or email: [email protected].
