Dozens of Northlanders to showcase works at Visual Arts State Festival

GOLDEN VALLEY — The Minnesota State High School League’s Visual Arts State Festival is noon Saturday, May 10, at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley.

Nearly 125 students who received Spotlight on the Arts recognition at the section level will showcase their art, including 32 students from 19 Northern Minnesota school districts.

The Northland has at least one work in 10 of the 12 categories.

Warren-Alvarado-Oslo’s Mercedes Scheie is the only participant with three works of art in the showcase, two sculptures and a craft.

Ten other students are showcasing two works, including Roseau’s Megan Delaney and Menahga’s Taliea Honga.

The event is a celebration, not a competition, the MSHSL said, and honors the creativity and dedication of the participants.

At the section festivals, judges evaluate artwork and can give a superior or excellent rating. Each judge, three to six at each festival, also selects a work for the Judge’s Award/Best of Site/Spotlight on the Arts.
