Federal arts funding cuts in the first few months of the Trump administration have left many San Francisco organizations reeling, with major museums, historical archives and independent galleries navigating newfound financial uncertainty.
While the loss of these grants represents the defunding of, at most, a couple of programs for larger entities, federal awards can represent close to the entire operating budget of smaller organizations.
The de Young is part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a sub-awardee of a canceled, six-figure National Endowment for the Humanities grant that would’ve funded an artwork conservation workshop next year.
