Winners, finalists of Memphis airport’s annual high school arts competition announced

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – High school students across the Mid-South had a simple yet complicated assignment: to capture Memphis in its truest form.

Their work was then entered into the Memphis airport’s 18th annual High School Visual Arts & Photography Competition. And on Tuesday, the winners and finalists were announced.

In all, 49 finalists were selected for the art contest, while 46 finalists were chosen for the photography competition. Below are the winners for each category:

  • 1st Place – TIE: “Rock N Soul: The Complete Memphis Music Story!” by Rosie Deng, Collierville High School
  • 1st Place – TIE: “Blues and Bridges: The Sound of Memphis” Liliana Khodor, Ridgeway High School
  • 2nd Place: “Memphis Blues” by Anthony Smith, Kirby High School
  • 3rd Place: “Beale Blues” by Kamsi Azogini, Collierville High School

Soon enough, their artwork will be on display for all to see at Memphis International Airport.

“We’re excited to once again showcase the incredible artistic talent of students in our community,” Terry Blue, President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, said in a news release. “With nearly five million people passing through MEM each year, this contest provides students with an incredible opportunity to showcase their artwork and photography.”

The airport said most of the art pieces are available for purchase, with the proceeds going directly to the student artist. And starting in June, the artwork will be on display at the airport — with the paintings in the baggage claim area and the photographs in the Terminal B ticketing lobby.

The work will remain on display for a year, the airport said.
