Is Disney’s Decision to Adapt ‘The Little Mermaid’ a Show of Support for Meghan Markle

With its planned live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which is set to come out on May 26, 2023, it seems like Disney has taken a side.

People who went to an early showing of the movie and critics noticed that the movie seemed to be against Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, and in favor of Meghan Markle.

A reviewer for Page Six who saw an early showing of Disney’s new remake said, “Ariel has sacrificed her voice to get to the surface and meet Prince Eric.”

“She can’t speak, so he tries to guess her name. His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after Ariel gives a disgusted reaction, he concludes ‘OK, definitely not Catherine.’”

Diana was Prince Harry’s late mother, and Catherine is the full name of his sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, often known as Kate Middleton, who is largely viewed as Markle’s real-life rival. Since Harry and Meghan stepped aside from their royal duties in 2020, Kate’s relationship with them has deteriorated.

The reviewer also said that the movie made a number of other small nods. The reviewer pointed out that in this movie version, Ariel is black, and Eric is white, which is similar to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Even though the names could be a coincidence, the moviegoer claimed that nothing else in the movie’s logic could explain why the mermaid was so angry.

“Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental.”
