1871 carte de visite photos.Marc Bona, cleveland.com
BASEBALL: 1871 Forest City BBC team CDV
What is known as carte de visite – a special type of 19th century photo printed on a card – was issued by Chicago sporting-goods company J.A. Pierce Co. It captures 10 members of the 1871 Forest City Base Ball Club of Cleveland, including future Hall of Fame catcher Deacon White. The auction house says it is believed to be the sole surviving example of a rare team CDV. The Forest Citys played the first game in National Association history May 4, 1871, against Kekionga Base Ball Club of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Lelands offers this historical tidbit: The street number of the J.A. Pierce Co. has been crossed out, and a new one is written in – presumably because the company had to move after the Great Chicago Fire that same year. The company issued team-composite CDVs for each of the league’s nine founding members. This one (2.5 by 3.875 inches) is from a rare find of baseball photographs recently discovered in an old album.

July 28, 1943, ticket stub.Marc Bona, cleveland.com
BASEBALL: Babe Ruth last at-bat wearing No. 3 at Yankee Stadium ticket stub
The stub is from a game when Babe Ruth played in an organized baseball game at a Major League stadium for the last time wearing his legendary No. 3 uniform. The War Relief Benefit games were played July 28, 1943, at Yankee Stadium. The first was a regular-season contest, with Cleveland beating New York, 6-2. The second game pitted a team of Navy North Carolina Pre-Flight School players who were Major Leaguers (called the “Cloudbusters”) who were undergoing pilot training against a combined team of former Yankees and Indians players designated as the “Yanklands.” The Cloudbusters featured Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky and Johnny Sain. Ruth managed the Yanklands in the jersey he wore from the 1942 film, “The Pride of the Yankees.” As a pinch-hitter, he walked against Sain, reached second and took himself out for a pinch runner. The stub is about 2.5 by 3.6 inches.
Info: Lot – 962. Opening bid – $300.

1948 World Series pennant.Marc Bona, cleveland.com
BASEBALL: Rare 1948 World Series pennant
The pennant is from the last year Cleveland won the World Series. Larry Doby, Satchel Paige and Bob Feller were on the team while Boston boasted Johnny Sain and Warren Spahn. The pennant is 10.6 by 28.25 inches and reads, “Souvenir of 1948 World Series/Boston Braves vs. Cleveland Indians.” Mostly blue with white letters and numerals, it is a bit faded.
Info: Lot – 1023. Opening bid – $750.

Cleveland Pipers plaque.Marc Bona, cleveland.com
BASKETBALL: 1961 Cleveland Pipers ABL charter membership plaque presented to George Steinbrenner
More than a decade before George Steinbrenner bought the New York Yankees he owned the Cleveland Pipers in his hometown. The Pipers played in the short-lived American Basketball League during the 1950s and early ‘60s. The plaque once hung on the walls of the team offices. It reads: “Charter Member American Basketball League This Will Certify That A Franchise In The American Basketball League Has Been Granted According To The Constitution And By Laws Of This Professional Basketball Association To George Steinbrenner Cleveland Pipers Basketball Club.” It lists the member cities and has league commissioner Abe Saperstein’s signature. The plaque – dated June 3, 1961 – is 15 by 12 inches.
