NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County announced that it has opened a new mental health clinic for individuals that have been affected by domestic and gender-based violence.
The Brooklyn hospital’s new clinic will offer several different mental health services, including screenings, individual and group sessions, and medication management, to name a few.
In addition to its Central Brooklyn location, NYC Health + Hospitals also established a mental health clinic at its Lincoln hospital in the South Bronx.
Together, the $2 million clinics are expected to serve around 3,000 patients each year, who can be referred to the program through one of the city’s domestic violence shelters or Family Justice Centers.
“Today’s announcement of expanded services for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence marks a pivotal moment for NYC Health + Hospitals,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Chief Executive Officer Sheldon McLeod.
“Supporting the establishment of a new specialized mental health clinic at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County is not just a statement of care; it’s a commitment to healing, empowerment, and a future where every individual feels safe, valued, and supported.”
The clinics are part of the city’s Domestic Violence Shelter Mental Health Initiative, which was announced back in May in collaboration with NYC Health + Hospitals.
The purpose of the $5.8 million initiative is to make mental health services more accessible to NYC families that reside in domestic violence shelters.
Through the initiative, the city says that it expects to support over 10,000 New Yorkers from 55 local shelters.
“These clinics, part of the Domestic Violence Mental Health Shelter Initiative, are a cornerstone in this administration’s broader efforts to maximize access to compassionate comprehensive care for our fellow New Yorkers, especially those who had endured hardships and deserve additional support to live safe and content lives,” said Eva Wong, executive director of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health.
