Vocal Art Ensemble brings audiences to Ireland …“ish”

The Davis-based a capella adult choir The Vocal Art Ensemble will present a program of pan-Celtic music, which they are lovingly calling “Ir-’ish’ – An Exploration of Celtic Sounds”.

“The ‘ish’ in the concert titles refers to our inclusion of music beyond what people may expect of Traditional Irish music,” describes director Tracia Barbieri. “We’ll certainly present that of course, but also some pieces from other Celtic nations, and even follow modern influences that take Irish music in exciting new directions.”

“The repertoire of “Ir-ish” embodies the whole of life,” offers VAE alto Pat Moore-Pickett. “Tears, laughter, rousing rhythms, nostalgia…and a few surprises!”

The Vocal Art Ensemble was founded in 2008 with the goal of “bringing together experienced musicians pursuing artistic expression through finessing the human voice.” Twice a year the group presents a unique themed concert set with a different look and feel.

“Singing with VAE has been a brand new choral experience for me,” explains VAE soprano Mijke Rhemtulla. “Tracia has this incredible ability to make tiny adjustments that dramatically affect the choir’s sound; it’s so cool to be a part of it.”

“I am new to VAE this season,” adds VAE baritone Bryan Plude, “and I’ve been very impressed with the dedication of the singers in this all-volunteer group.”

Complementing this program will be the instrumental talents of Vince Wolfe and Margaret Graham, both of whom can often be seen performing with the Irish band Paddy on the Binge. George Haver, who also frequently performs in the area, will be providing key instrumental accompaniment as well.

“All of the instrumentalists are truly incredible musicians,” says VAE alto Lori Leong, “and it has been really exciting and fun to have them performing along with us.”

“I could listen to them all day!” she concludes.

Ir-’ish’ will be presented on Friday and Saturday, June 6, and 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, June 8, at 4 pm. All performances are at the Davis United Methodist Church, 1620 Anderson Road. A suggested donation of $10-25 per person will be gratefully accepted at the door.
