MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – School’s out for the summer, but kitchens in Montgomery County Public Schools are staying busy making sure no kid goes hungry, offering free meals to students throughout the month of June.
Although summer is two months of students being able to relax, sometimes it’s a time of stress for parents and families wondering how they can get food on the table. As Supervisor for School Nutrition Programs, Michelle Knotts doesn’t want any MCPS families having that fear.
“Our goal is to continually look for avenues and opportunities to roll out programs where we can get meals and they’re easily accessible to our children,” she said.
That’s why for the first time, MCPS is offering a summer feeding service program. Anyone in the community who has children 18 years or younger is invited to a free breakfast throughout the week from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. and lunch 12:45 – 1:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The program is available through June 26th at Eastern Montgomery School, Prices Fork Elementary School, Shawsville Elementary School, Falling Branch Elementary School, Belview Elementary School, Christiansburg Elementary School, and Christiansburg Primary School. Montgomery Central will host the program through June 18th from 8:30 – 9:00 am and 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.
The only requirement is meals must be consumed at the schools.
“We’re serving a lot of wonderful meals, a lot of the kids favorites, chicken patties, sandwiches, chicken nuggets… Today we had a meatball flatbread options well as ham and cheese and fresh fruits and fresh vegetables,” said Knotts.
Knotts emphasized it’s not just for families in need. Anyone who qualifies is more than welcome to enjoy a free meal.
“It could be individual families or it could be camps or groups or daycares, as long as they’re able to transport the children over here we are happy to feed them,” she said.
