BILL NYE HAS always been a man of science—obviously. But did you know he’s also a man who cares deeply about his health, exercise, diet, and nutrition too? The TV legend turns 70 later this year, and gave Men’s Health a look inside his very stocked refrigerator and home gym for the latest episode of “Gym and Fridge.”
Nye’s fridge is filled with many of the staples—including his favorite Dijon mustard (from Trader Joe’s) and his milk of choice (“What I call the infinity milk,” he says. “They use pressure to pasteurize it. This is back when we were concerned about public health, and respected germs and science. It was a different time.”).
One staple he puts a lot of emphasis on is eggs—he always has a carton. And while the price of eggs has been a topic of much discussion in the last year or so, Nye says even at their most expensive they’re still basically worth it.
“I know people are running in circles screaming about the price of eggs,” he explains. “There’s so much protein—if an egg costs $1, it’s still a pretty good value.”
Nye has firm stances on a lot of those different staples. He loves the natural sugars in an apple. He eats lots of chicken, keeps tons of beans around, and says that our agricultural scientists (aka farmers) have made some incredible progress on melons. His midnight snack? Popcorn, which he makes over the stove in an old-school popcorn maker.
He loves his juicer, he doesn’t love super spicy food, he makes his coffee in very particular, and he’s mastered a homemade salad dressing that he creates from scratch in a 75-year-old salad bowl like an absolute pro. In short? Science is complicated, and so it makes sense that someone known as “The Science Guy” has a similar, well thought out take on just about everything he makes at home and puts into his body.
