MercyOne North Iowa helps Clear Lake man reclaim active lifestyle

MASON CITY, Iowa — Brad Bonin, a 67-year-old from Clear Lake, is thriving in an active lifestyle after overcoming years of severe foot pain from an old football injury.

Bonin’s journey to recovery began when he sought help at MercyOne North Iowa Orthopedic Care.

“I thought the pain was normal for my age, but it was much worse,” Bonin said. His knee surgeon, Dr. Daron Jones, referred him to Dr. Tyler Mulkey, a specialist in foot surgery. X-rays revealed old fractures in his midfoot, likely from years of wearing football cleats.

In May 2024, Bonin underwent a five-hour surgery to repair his foot. He praised the care he received, saying, “Dr. Mulkey and the nurses were fantastic.” Despite needing a second surgery when his big toe did not heal properly, Bonin remained committed to his recovery and began physical therapy in December.

Today, Bonin enjoys regular workouts and biking. He has competed in the shot put and discus events at the Iowa Senior Games and the National Senior Games.

“I feel great now, and I’ve learned that life is too short to suffer when you don’t have to,” Bonin said, encouraging others to seek help. In addition to his active lifestyle, Bonin works as a paraprofessional at Clear Lake Middle School, supporting at-risk kids. “I believe every child deserves a chance,” he said.

MercyOne North Iowa Orthopedic Care says Bonin’s story highlights the importance of seeking medical help.
