STORRS, Conn. – Four Huskies scored in double digits as the second-ranked UConn women’s basketball team downed Southern Connecticut State in an exhibition, 97-38, Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion.
Junior Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 18 points and went 4-for-6 from three-point range. Senior Aaliyah Edwards notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Graduate student Aubrey Griffin came off the bench to score 14 points with seven rebounds. Griffin went 5-for-6 from the field. Junior Caroline Ducharme had 10 points and a team-high three steals.
Saturday was the long-awaited return of redshirt junior Paige Bueckers, who missed the 2022-23 season with an injury. Bueckers finished with seven points, four rebounds and seven assists in 12 minutes.
After an Owls’ three pointer to start the game, the Huskies went on to outscore SCSU 32-8 in the first quarter. UConn held a 52-17 lead at halftime. The Huskies held Southern to under 10 points in each of the first three quarters.
UConn held a 42-2 advantage in paint points and a 28-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
Four Huskies made their debuts in UConn uniforms Saturday. Redshirt freshman Ice Brady (seven points, four rebounds) and true freshmen KK Arnold (six points, four rebounds, three assists), Qadence Samuels (eight points, seven rebounds) and Ashlynn Shade (eight points, seven rebounds) all played double-digit minutes.
The Huskies officially begin the 2023-24 season next Wednesday against Dayton in the XL Center at 7 p.m. Tickets to the game are available HERE.
