Foo Fighters Recruit Josh Freese as Drummer After Taylor Hawkins’ Death

A year after tragedy hit the band, Foo Fighters are back to rocking and rolling.

The news of Josh Freese joining the Foo Fighters for their first tour since Taylor Hawkins’ death was announced on May 21st, 2023.

Hawkins was the drummer for the megaplatinum band for a long time. He died on March 25, 2022, at age 50, from an accidental overdose in Bogota, Colombia, where the band was going to play.

Variety says that even though the band said it would keep going at the end of last year, they did everything they could not tell who their new drummer was.

They shared the news in a livestream called Foo Fighters: Preparing Music for Concerts, which showed all of the band members joking around in their practice room while playing their guitars.

Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tommy Lee of Motley Crüe, and Danny Carey of Tool, all well-known rock drummers, participated in the clever trick. They knocked on the door and walked into the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 practice space but left again.

The camera then moved to Freese, who was sitting behind the drums. At that moment, the band started playing “All My Life,” a fan favorite from 2002. Um… EXCUSE ME?!” he says in the video clip. “Can we play a song or something?!”

The band then starts playing songs from their new record, But Here We Are, which will be released on June 2, 2023.
