The Park City Police Department in late October received a report that appears to have involved the possibility of homelessness in the vicinity of where City Hall is considering whether to develop an arts and culture district.

The police logged the case at a little bit before 10 a.m. on Oct. 24 on or close to Munchkin Road. The street is close to the municipal land where the discussions are ongoing about an arts district, but the location does not seem to be on the land itself. The initial report to the police identified “what appeared to be a camp in a temporary shelter in the Arts and Culture District” in the area of a parking lot on Bonanza Drive.

The initial report classified the case as suspected vagrancy, a category that is sometimes used in cases involving possible homelessness. Municipal streets staffers notified the police of the case.

The Police Department said an officer who investigated located a camp. There was nobody there at the time of the officer found the camp, the police said. The Police Department said officers did not remove any items but left a notice for the person or people who were using the camp.

On Saturday, meanwhile, the police were told someone may be living in a van in the China Bridge garage. The department described the circumstances as suspicious.

The police occasionally receive reports of homelessness or camps that are believed to have been used by people without places to live. Cases have been reported over the years in a variety of places, including the Old Town transit center and on hillsides. There have also been cases of people seen living in vehicles.

Homelessness, though, is rare in Park City, and there are few local housing resources for people without places to live.
