VESTAL, N.Y. — Junior forward Genevieve Coleman scored a game-high 18 points while redshirt sophomore guard Jadyn Weltz had 16 points, leading Binghamton (1-0) to a 72-59 victory over Bloomsburg (0-0) in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Monday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats have now won five out of their last six season openers.
Coleman went 7-of-10 from the field and sank all four of her free throws. She also added four rebounds.
Weltz, meanwhile, was 6-of-9 from the field and canned a pair of three-pointers. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.
Weltz scored eight of her points in the first period as the Bearcats built a 28-15 lead 10 minutes into the game. Five of those points came during a 14-0 run in a span of 2:59 to put the Bearcats in front 26-12.
From there, Binghamton built a 45-25 halftime lead. The Bearcats shot 50 percent (17-of-34) during the first half.
During the second half, the Bearcats never led by fewer than 11 points.
Sophomore forward Camryn Fauria added nine points – shooting 4-for-5 from the field – and added five rebounds. Graduate student guard Denai Bowman chipped in seven points, four rebounds and three assists.
Bloomsburg was led by Katelin Starr, who scored 17 points. She also finished with a game-high nine rebounds. Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Huskies was Lauren Kirsch (14 points) and Maddie LeFrance (11 points).
The Bearcats outscored Bloomsburg 46-28 in the paint and had 28 points off of turnovers. Binghamton also had a commanding 22-2 lead in bench scoring.
