We turned more than our clocks back this week as new, expanded editions of two Beatles compilations arrive in conjunction with the new Fab Four song “Now and Then.” It joins new releases from Garth Brooks, Chris Stapleton, the Zac Brown Band and others, as well as a retooled edition of Maneskin’s new album and an archival gem from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. (All subject to change)…
Album of the Week: Reissues are seldom the biggest new releases of a given week (“Taylor’s Versions” don’t count), but it’s different when it’s the Beatles. The new editions of the 1973 compilations “1962-1966″ (aka “The Red Album”) and “1967-1970″ (aka “The Blue Album”) (both Capitol/UMe) are essential upgrades in the myriad ways, from Giles (son of George) Martin’s state-of-the-art stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes to the nine additional tracks on each set. That means “Red” has covers as well as a George Harrison song, “Taxman,” that weren’t part of original release while “Blue” concludes fittingly with “Now and Then,” the new and final Beatles recording, from a John Lennon home demo, that surfaced earlier this month. All these years later the Fabs can still make us love them, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Album Title of the Week: Patrick Shiroishi, “I Was Too Young to Hear Silence” (American Dreams)
Did Ya Know?: Garth Brooks has a new album out — “Time Traveler,” his 14th overall and first in three years — but there’s only one way and place to get it, at least physically. It’s part of a new box set, “The Limited Series,” which also includes Brooks’ “Man Against Machine,” “Gunslinger,” “Fun” and “Triple Live” and is available only at Bass Pro Shops. Some individual songs will be available via streaming services, but the album itself is, for the time being, a box set exclusive.
