The 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards on Nov. 6 in New York City proved to be a big night for beauty, too. Stars like Serena Williams, Nina Dobrev, Lori Harvey, and Madelyn Cline stunned in their respective glam, but as far as we’re concerned, Rosario Dawson knocked it out of the park with her chic bowl-cut hairstyle.
The “Ahsoka” star presented during the big night at the American Museum of Natural History with her jet-black hair chopped extra short and matching piecey micro bangs across her forehead. Aside from the hypermodern cut, her hair was also noticeably shiny, giving off a polished feel. She wore a white structural strapless gown with a large 3D rose on the front and paired it with black and red mules, a maroon clutch, and geometric gold dangly earrings. The rest of her beauty look was kept fairly natural, save for her deep-red lipstick as a pop of color. This allowed her cool-girl cut to take center stage, contrasting the femininity of the gown beautifully.
Bowl cuts made an unexpected return at the start of 2022, and the trend was quickly adopted by celebrities far and wide. Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Lisa Rinna, Jennifer Garner, Bella Hadid, and Cardi B all made the controversial look their own, convincing us that this once-avoided style (if your parent gave you a bowl cut in your youth, you know) is actually pretty chic. “It’s easy, it’s fun, it’s bold,” Devin Toth, a hairstylist at NYC’s Salon SCK, told POPSUGAR in 2021.
Much like other retro styles that have been repopularized — the shag and the mullet come to mind — the bowl cut has undergone a bit of a mini facelift to bring it into the 21st century. Instead of wearing it with curled-in ends, which is what gives it a strong circular shape, you can straighten them slightly as Dawson did, softening the overall vibe.
Take a look for yourself ahead.
