Boulder, Colo. – On Monday evening #20 University of Colorado took down the defending national champions, #1 LSU at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during a nationally televised non-conference matchup in the season opener for both teams. On Wednesday evening, the Buffaloes will host the Le Moyne College Dolphins at the CU Events Center at 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
Colorado, which advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season before falling to the eventual national runners up Iowa, bested Angel Reese, Hailey Van Lith, Annesah Morrow and company by a score of 92-78.
Reese tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds during the setback, while five-star freshman Mikaylah Williams scored a team-high 17 points.
Colorado senior guard Frida Formann and junior center Aaronette Vonleh both had big nights for the Buffaloes. Forman shot 7-11 from beyond the three-point line and finished with a game-high 27 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Vonleh tallied a game-high 11 field goals to register 24 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Guard Jaylyn Sherrod, who was an All-Pac-12 and an All-Defensive selection last season for the Buffs, registered 19 points, a team-high eight rebounds, a team-high six assists and three steals against the Tigers. Sherrod shot 9-12 from the free throw line in 33 minutes played.
Colorado forced LSU into 19 turnovers, but they committed 21 giveaways themselves.
The Buffaloes shot 53% from the field during the win, while limiting LSU to 4-10 from beyond the three-point line. Colorado also scored 28 fast break points.
The Dolphins traveled to the state of Colorado on Sunday, and opened the 2023-24 season with a game at Colorado State University on Monday.
Le Moyne fell to the Rams at Moby Arena by a score of 69-49, and were paced offensively by fifth-year guard Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney), who recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks in 33 minutes played.
Baker averaged a double-double last season with 16 of them throughout the campaign.
Baker, who went 0-4 on three-point attempts in 2022-23 after taking just one three pointer in 2021-22, shot 2-3 from beyond the arc on Monday.
Sophomore guard Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) also knocked down two three-point field goals against the Rams and finished the game with eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
Graduate guard Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) also grabbed six rebounds to go along with six points and two assists, while junior guard Brianna Williams (Brampton, Ontario/Southwest Academy/Hartford) registered seven rebounds and two field goals in her Le Moyne debut.
Junior guard Emily Florvil (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) contributed four boards, including three offensive rebounds, along with three points, a steal, and a team-high three assists.
Freshman guard Leah Middleton (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) logged 25 minutes off the bench in her collegiate debut.
Wednesday will mark the first-ever meeting between Le Moyne and Colorado, as well as Le Moyne’s first game against a nationally ranked opponent in its brand-new Division I era.
