Five people charged after car strikes MPD squad car during police pursuit, officials say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Five people were arrested after a car hits a Memphis Police squad car while officers were chasing them, police said.

Memphis Police went to a call about a robbery where a car was taken in the area of Nelson Avenue on November 6.

Officers were told that when the victims got out of their car, two suspects came up to them with guns.

The suspects also demanded money from them, and when they said they did not have them, the suspects took the victims’ Nissan Rouge.

A day later, officers saw the Nissan Rouge in the area of Getwell Road and Kimball Avenue, police said.

When officers tried to stop the car, the driver refused and pursuit began, police said.

Multiple cars were struck by a Memphis Police squad car at an intersection as police chased two people they later arrested.

Two suspects ran from the car near Marianna Street and was later taken into custody, police said.

No one was injured and the two people officers pursued were arrested after the car they were in crashed, according to Memphis Police Department (MPD).

FOX13 News spoke to one of the three drivers at the intersection following the crash, whose car was struck by a MPD squad car at the intersection.

Terrence Aldridge said he was in his stopped car in the turning lane at the intersection and saw the police cars, with sirens turned on, speeding toward his position.

He thought he was clear of the MPD cars, he said, but one side-swapped his car on the passenger side, pushing it aside.

The same squad car, Aldridge said, then hit two more cars.

Video captured an image of a MPD squad car with an apparent blown tire.

Aldridge said the squad car’s impact was fast enough that sparks were ignited in the collision.

He questioned whether the Memphis Police Department has a no-high speed chase policy.

“If that’s the case, are you guys ignoring it?” he asked.
