Hollywood Nights front man Rick Murphy was just 12 years old when he convinced his parents to let him travel from his home in Cherry Hill, NJ to see KISS perform in Philadelphia.
At that show, Murphy’s life was instantly changed, but not because of the headline act. It was the opener-Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.
“I knew right away you could tell the horse power that Bob would bring to the stage and all that gravel along with it, and I found that to be something that was pleasing to me. It just sounded great…made you feel excited,” he tells 1071 The Boss Midday host Michele Amabile. “So throughout the years of me doing my own music and performing other people’s music I just hit a spot in the road where I wanted to put a tribute band together and everybody around me knew I had a gravel voice as it is, and what better fit than to pay homage to Bob Seger.”
That tribute band-Hollywood Nights: Bog Seger Experience--features nine musicians and a setlist very close to Seger’s, along with some songs the Detroit icon didn’t perform as often.
Murphy called in to 1071 The Boss ahead of the band’s show at The Carteret Performing Arts Center to talk about the band, the show, and a very personal story about how the late Silver Bullet Band saxophonist, Alto Reed, gave encouragement to the group with Seger’s blessing.
Hollywood Nights will perform Friday, Nov. 10, at the Carteret Performing Arts Center in Carteret. Tickets available at carteretpac.com
