RIO GRANDE VALLEY – There are at least 13 players who previously played for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s basketball team that have played, currently play, or will play professional basketball in 2023-24. Here is an update on how some of them are doing, courtesy of Eurobasket:
Former UTRGV players that are currently playing professional basketball:
Shaquille Hines (2012-16) led Bambitious Nara in scoring with 27 points and added five rebounds and three assists in their 80-68 loss to Yamagata in the Japanese B2 League. Hines is averaging 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 11 games.
Terry Winn III (2017-19) had 19 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in Antranik’s 83-70 victory over Antonine in the Lebanese LBL. Winn is averaging 14.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.0 steal through three games.
Javon Levi (2017-21) recorded a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in KK Dubrovnik’s 78-74 overtime victory over KK Furnir to improve to 4-3 in the Croatian Premijer Liga. Levi is averaging 12.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 steals in six games.
Lesley Varner II (2016-20) led Slavia in scoring with 20 points and three steals in their four-point loss to Brno in the Czech Republic NBL. Varner is averaging 21.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.8 steals through 11 games.
Luis Valera (2008-10) led Guadalajara in scoring with 15 points, three rebounds, one steal, and two blocks in their 83-71 loss to Chlorella in Group B-A of the Spanish EBA. Valera is averaging 15.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in six games.
Paul Stoll (2006-08) finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists in Fuerza Regia’s 75-64 victory over Halcones UV Xalapa in game one of the quarterfinals in the Mexican LNBP. Stoll is averaging 6.4 points, 4.4 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 18.9 minutes through 19 games.
Janari Joesaar (2014-15) scored six points with three rebounds, and one steal in Anwil Wloclawek’s 76-71 loss against Surne Bilbao Basket in the FIBA Europe Cup. Joesaar is averaging 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in four games FIBA Europe Cup games.
Jordan Jackson (2017-20) made the Maine Celtics’ NBA G-League opening night roster. The Celtics’ first game of the season is tonight when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Capital City Go-Go at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Other former UTRGV players, who have played professional basketball recently:
Johnny Crnogorac (2017-19) played for Sydney City Comets in Australian NBL One in the spring of 2023.
Justin Johnson (2021-23) was part of the Houston Rockets NBA 2K24 Summer League team in 2023.
Perry Petty (2010-11) signed for Ahly Benghazi in Libyan D1. In the spring of 2023, started for Shahrdari Gorgan in the WASL and averaged a team-high 21.6 points and 4.2 assists per game. Perry also finished second on the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
Marek Nelson (2019-22) played for Team Phoenix in the Eurobasket Summer League in 2023.
Lew Stallworth (2015-18) played for Team Trouble in the ABA in the spring of 2023.
