Tennis signs Spyrou as Morelli’s first recruit – Northwestern State University Athletics

NATCHITOCHES—A standout athlete from a powerhouse junior college program has signed with the Northwestern State tennis team for the 2025 season.

Zoi Spyrou, a transfer from Tyler Junior College, becomes the first recruit of the first-year head coach Marcos Morelli.

“Zoi is such a good fit for the Lady Demon program,” Morelli said. “Stefano, Patric, and I are very excited and can’t wait to start working with her. She is a tremendous player with amazing athletic abilities and comes from a family with great values.”

Spyrou, a native of Athens, Greece, ranked as high as 1,677 in the ITA rankings, winning a few tournaments along the way.

With the Apaches, she ranked No. 14 in the nation in doubles and No. 17 in singles as a freshman. During the fall season, Spyrou compiled a mark of 6-4 in singles and 8-4 in doubles.

In NSU’s home tournament in September, Spyrou helped her doubles team reach the semifinals in her draw. In the ITA regional, she and her partner won their draw in doubles and Spyrou finished second in her ITA Regional singles draw.

In doubles, she and her partner also were invited to the W80 Pro Challenge in October. She and her partner also finished third in the nation at the ITA Cup in October.

“In the past year and a half, she has gained a lot of experience playing high for such a good program like Tyler Junior College,” Morelli said. That experience will make her transition to NSU that much easier and we could not be more excited to have her as a member the class.”

Morelli and the current version of the Lady Demons gear up for the 2024 season, which begins in January, as the team aims to win their second Southland Conference title in three seasons.
