UNC Basketball programs drop in latest AP Top 25 Polls

Even after both programs started 2-0 on the season, the UNC basketball programs both dropped in the latest AP Top 25 polls.

Officially one week into the 2023-2024 college basketball season, the Associated Press released its first in-season updates for their weekly top 25 polls.

Among a bunch of shakeups in the rankings, both UNC basketball programs dropped in the latest edition.

After two blowout victories, Hubert Davis and the UNC men’s basketball program slid down one spot to No. 20. Baylor and USC both jumped the Tar Heels, as they were No. 20 and No. 21 respectively in last week’s poll.

The story was the same for Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball team, as they also dropped a spot in the latest rankings. The Tar Heels currently sit at No. 17, as three programs jumped them this week. Conference foe Florida State was one of them, as the Seminoles moved up six spots after defeating Tennessee.

Of course, it’s still very early in the season, as both UNC basketball programs likely dropped due to two reasons:

  • Other teams that played (and beat) higher-quality opponents (hence moving up in the rankings)
  • Not putting together totally convincing victories (Ex. Men vs. Lehigh and Women vs. Davidson)

Regardless, it only matters where you are once the season comes to a close, as both programs have plenty of time to move on up the rankings.
