Iowa basketball’s Riley Mulvey to redshirt 2023-24 season

IOWA CITY — Iowa forward Riley Mulvey is redshirting the 2023-24 season, men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery said Monday.

Mulvey, a 3-star prospect from New York, was part of Iowa’s 2021 recruiting class. He appeared in 17 games in his first season with the Hawkeyes. He played in 12 last season. Across those two seasons combined, Mulvey totaled 27 points, 26 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Iowa still has the frontcourt pieces to thrive without him this season. Valparaiso transfer Ben Krikke is off to a fast start. Freshmen Ladji Dembele and Owen Freeman have been promising, as well. Belmont transfer Even Brauns has played sparingly this season but serves as frontcourt depth if needed. Iowa has also gone with a relatively small starting five of Dasonte Bowen, Tony Perkins, Payton Sandfort, Patrick McCaffery and Krikke.

Iowa is off to a 2-0 start this season. The Hawkeyes took down North Dakota to start the season followed by Alabama State. Iowa won those two games by a combined 73 points. The Hawkeyes face their biggest test to date this season when they take on Creighton Tuesday in Omaha.
