Detroit man who fled Eastpointe police in stolen car charged

A Detroit man is facing eight charges in connection with allegedly driving a stolen car and leading police on a chase last week in Macomb County.

Melvin Cooley-Cline IV, 20, is accused of fleeing Eastpointe police who pursued him on Nov. 9, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Melvin Cooley-Cline IV was allegedly driving a stolen car when he fled Eastpointe police.

Cooley-Cline allegedly drove into a field and fled on foot after an officer struck his car. Police later arrested the man, finding a firearm on him and in his car, according to the release.

He has since been charged with five felonies and three misdemeanors, including fleeing and eluding in the third degree, unlawful driving away of a car and resisting or obstructing a police officer.

An Eastpointe district court magistrate arraigned Cooley-Cline IV and set his bond at $250,000. He was also required to have a mental health evaluation.

His release also includes other conditions such as wearing a steel GPS tether, house arrest and not driving.

“Fleeing from the police not only puts officers and innocent people at risk but also makes things worse for the person doing it,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in the release. “By prosecuting those who choose to run, we send a strong message that we won’t tolerate such dangerous actions in our community.”

A probable cause hearing and preliminary exam are scheduled for Nov. 21 and Nov. 28.
