With the holiday season approaching, the American Farm Bureau has estimated that Thanksgiving dinner costs for 10 people have increased since 2020 by almost $17 dollars.This is something in the minds of our New Mexico food banks. “With holidays approaching in a week, we do see that the fall and winter months definitely have higher hunger rates. For a lot of those same reasons, cost to, you know, higher, especially for certain things during the winter months,” Sonya Warwick, director of communications for Roadrunner Food Bank.Nationwide, about 10% of households did not have enough money to buy groceries in 2021. “We saw double-digit surges in food prices for a lot of different things, and that has hit families, and it hits disproportionately, lower income and middle-income families to spend a greater percentage of their income on food,” Reilly White, a UNM associate professor, said. White said this is more apparent in some Thanksgiving food favorites. “Fresh cranberry prices are lower, but canned cranberry prices are actually trending higher. So it’s forcing consumers to re-think what they can put in their budget and their bottom line to host,” White said. Or extra energy cost or just every day cost to live,” Warwick said.
