Tech expert’s five Amazon gadgets everyone should look out for on Black Friday

Amazon’s Black Friday deals will kickstart next week on Friday, November 17, a week before the official global date. The long-awaited price drops will last on its site right up until 11:59 on November 27 before the deals are ramped up with the Cyber Monday offers, a day often saved for retailers to get rid of any leftover stock.

While products from popular brands including Ninja, GHD and Samsung are featured heavily across its pages the retailer’s own range of tech products often comes with the biggest money savings prices. Whether you’re after the classic Alexa-powered Echo Dot, a Ring Doorbell, TV or Tablet, November is considered one of the best times to add one to the online checkout.

And as a tech writer who spends my working 9-5 finding the lowest price drops throughout the year I’d have to agree. Not only are the discounts worthwhile, but the cheaper prices won’t mean you scrimp on quality either, as its Fire TV (a huge Samsung rival) proves.

These are the top five pieces of Amazon tech I’d recommend eyeing up in this year’s sale bonanza if you’re looking for both long-lasting quality and a cheaper deal. After writing about tech specs for a living this is why the Echo Pop, Echo Show, Fire TV Stick, Kindle, and Prime Video should be on your list.

Echo Pop

It has all the perks of an Echo Dot speaker but is suitable for any space. Having owned a classic Echo Dot device myself there’s no shying away from saying that they can be quite clunky (mine certainly was on the kitchen worktop) but Amazon’s newest Pop device eases that.

The obvious difference is its quirky new style which has been designed to fit in any room around your house, or office. The ‘downside’ to this is it doesn’t have a round speaker creating a surround sound, but the spherical shape still booms to resonate – a reason why I’d suggest adding it to your list.

On top of the specs, there’s a hard-to-miss deal that’ll get you two of the devices for the price of one, meaning you can get a £34.98 device for free.

Echo Show

“This perfectly sized tablet will change your day-to-day tech life, it certainly has for me. It’s not too bad on the eye either, making it a suitable feature in any styled home”, are the words of a reviewer who tested out the tablet turn speaker on The Mirror.

It has everything packed in and more, with the Alexa voice features of the Pop, Dot, and Firestick as well as being visually attractive thanks to its tablet-sized screen. The Echo Show comes in three different sizes, the Echo Show 5, 8 and 15.

This Black Friday it looks as though the Echo Show 5 is the one to pick this shopping season as Amazon has introduced the same two-for-one deal as the Echo Pop.

Fire TV Stick

It may look small, but Amazon’s plug-in Fire Stick can transform a standard TV to perform as well as the higher-end #Sky, Virgin and Samsung smart TV sets. And all you need to have is an HDMI cable on your device.

From here you’ll be able to stream Prime Video and your favourites from Netflix, Disney+ and ITV (to name a few) from a click of a remote. It’s a smart feature which boosts it to the top of many TV shoppers wish lists and one which leaves tech experts falling back to recommending it as a cheaper alternative than buying a smart Fire TV or even Sky Glass device.

Kindle

Amazon is yet to drop the price of its Kindle devices from its 2022 version of the original model to the Paperwhite or Oasis. Despite there not being any price drops it is expected to fall any day from now, with all eyes pointing towards the week before the official Black Friday date.

As someone who’s covered various Amazon sales its Kindle devices always feature heavily and if you were to pick a time to add one to your online basket November would be it. The 2022 model is currently £84.99 at the retailer but price checker CamelCamelCamel shows it could drop to as low as £64.99 like it’s down in previous sales.

And once you have your new e-reader in hand shoppers could also make the most out of Amazon’s current price drop on its Kindle Unlimited subscription. It’s an online library full of digital versions of your favourite books, memoirs, magazines and autobiographies ready to download and its current offer will give you hundreds of books for free.

That’s because Kindle Unlimited is now free for the first three months, a service which usually costs £9.49 a month to tap into. And once finished readers won’t be forced to stay signed up to the deal as it’s free to leave whenever you like.

Prime Video

You can watch hundreds of your favourite series, films and documentaries for free. It may not be a physical product but it’s one which many may benefit from, especially if you have a host of festive films on your list to watch. There’s currently a free 30-day trial which means you’d avoid the normal £8.99 monthly fee, and there is no catch if you want to leave.
